Woburn, United Kingdom

by Shannon van de Laar

UK Creative Writer, James Dodds, answers a few questions for us about why his home of Woburn, Bedfordshire, UK is so charming and why we should visit.

What is one thing Woburn should be known for and why?

Definitely the location. An hour outside of the sprawling metropolis that is London, is our quiet rural home, showing that peace and comfort in the countryside are always within reach of a busy city.

What makes Woburn stand out compared to nearby places?

I suppose what is particularly unique about this town or this area, in general, is the land. It has the estate of the Duke of Bedford, and also room for a Safari Park. Even though the Duke actually lives here, the Woburn Abbey is open for visitors as well as the gardens and the grounds to the public.

If a visitor to Woburn was blind, how would you describe it to them?

We would start at the train station, an open crossing with large mechanised barriers and red blinking indicators for approaching trains. Passing the first pub on our right, park, and playground on our left with now rusted slides and climbing bars. Continuing up the road takes us past the vets, shops, and houses before reaching a bustling high street full of street parked cars, quaint cafes, and idyllic restaurants. The only path out from here leads us into the thick forests of the Woburn woods.

What is your favourite restaurant in Woburn?

The Woburn Thai on Leighton Street has a beautifully decorated interior, friendly staff, and delivers fabulous food every time.

What is your favourite activity to do outdoors in Woburn?

Walking. It is a relaxing break from the monotony of remote office work and a great chance to enjoy the weather and the natural attractions.

What about your favourite indoor activity?

I would recommend visiting restaurants in the area.

What is the best thing to do with children in your Woburn and why?

Other than Woburn Safari Park (which is fantastic for all ages) there are a number of parks and playgrounds dotted near the high street or the estate areas, and an outside swimming pool perfect for hot summers!

What is the best thing to do as a solo traveller in your place and why?

Check into a room offered by one of our three village pubs, have a full and hearty breakfast before equipping your best walking boots, and set off to enjoy the sights I have already mentioned.

What is the best thing to do as a couple in your place and why?

Recently my partner and I went to Woburn Thai and managed to visit at a quiet time of day so it felt extra special to be enjoying the atmosphere and fine dining with just ourselves there. We have also enjoyed a small pancake eatery and delicatessen on the high street.

Describe the local cuisine or food that your place is famous for, or should be famous for. Where can you get it?

We do not have a particularly local dish that is unique to us. As a country, fish and chips are served at numerous pubs and we have a dedicated fish and chips takeaway chain shop as well.

If a visitor was only in Woburn for 24 hours, what would you suggest for me to do, and why?

If you like animals, head to the Safari Park

Foodies should go to the Thai restaurant I mentioned earlier

For nature lovers, go to the Abbey.

Or if you are in town then, go to the Sunday markets in the town square.
