Delaware, United States

by Shannon van de Laar

Taylor Beal, author and owner of Traverse with Taylor, answers a few questions for us about why the state of Delaware is a great place to think about visiting while in the US.

If I only had 24 hours to visit Delaware, describe what I should do.

If you have only 24 hours to visit Delaware, you want to head straight to the beaches. Rehoboth Beach to be exact! Spend some of the morning shopping at the outlets, enjoy a drive-on beach in the afternoon, and end with an evening on the boardwalk where you can ride amusement rides at Funland and have your pick of a ton of ice cream joints!

What is your favourite restaurant /cafe /eating /drinking place in Delaware?

Rehoboth Beach is famous for its pizza. In fact, there has always been a bit of a war between the two best pizza places in town. On one side of the boardwalk boulevard is Grotto’s Pizza. On the other side is Nicola’s. Both are FANTASTIC!

If you could suggest for me to just do ONE thing in Delaware, what would it be and why?

Enjoy an evening on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. There is tons of great food, things to do, and the beach!

What is one thing Delaware should be known for and why?

Delaware is the best central location. We are only a few hours away from Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C. This means that you can get pretty much anywhere- quickly.

Tell me about your favourite outdoor activity in Delaware?

Rent a tube and spend an afternoon floating down the Brandywine River. It takes about two hours, and the water is a great way to cool down in summer.

Tell me about your favourite indoor activity in Delaware?

The Delaware Children’s Museum is a beautiful new museum dedicated to involving kids in their own exploration and discovery play. There are many different rooms and activities where kids can grow a garden, paint, or even play with water!

Imagine I am blind. If I come to visit Delaware, how would you describe it to me?

The drive-on beach is packed with trucks with flags waving in the wind. You can see the ocean spread out before you for miles- its waves a deep, dark blue. Kids run through the surf and stop to dig up sand crabs after each wave. Dogs are catching frisbees and jogging with their owners while parents build sand castles on the dunes.

What makes Delaware stand out compared to nearby places?

Delaware does not have a bunch of “tourist attractions.” People don’t come here to see things. People come here to experience them. The boardwalk or the gardens or the state parks are not statues or museums to simply see. In order to experience Delaware, you have to participate in it. You have to actively be here to enjoy it!

What is the best thing to do with children in Delaware and why?

Visit Winterthur and explore the gardens. An old mansion-turned-museum, the grounds of Winterthur are a paradise for adventure. The Enchanting Woods have specific areas designed to inspire pretend play, and an afternoon here will engage kids of all ages!

What is the best thing to do as a solo traveller there and why?

Head down to Dewey Beach and enjoy a small waterside town that has a vibrant nightlife scene. Visit the Starboard, North Beach, or the Rusty Rudder for live music and drinks! You will make friends in no time!

What is the best thing to do as a couple in Delaware and why?

Book an overnight stay at a Bed and Breakfast near the beaches. Wake up, grab breakfast at a small cafe (I recommend Cafe Papillon!), and spend the day doing whatever you enjoy! You can hit the beach, shop at the outlets, take a brewery tour at Dogfish Head Brewery, or walk around downtown Rehoboth. No matter what you love, there’s something for everyone.
